ABU raises c’ttee to assess its revenue generation potentials
. Prof Bello Sabo of the Department of Finance to chair the assignment
Ahmadu Bello University has inaugurated a five member strategic committee tasked with assessing the revenue generation potentials, financial performance, and expenditure patterns of various units of the institution.
The move is a bold step by the new administration under the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, to explore sustainable funding alternatives amidst dwindling federal allocations.
The inauguration was presided over by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B. Bako, who represented the Vice-Chancellor.
Inaugurating the committee, Prof Bako stressed the importance of the assignment, describing it as “timely and critical” given the current economic realities confronting higher education in Nigeria.
“We have always talked about ABU’s potentials for revenue generation, but to what extent have these potentials been fully explored? Now more than ever, it is time to look inwards.
“Education has become a commodity, which we must learn to harness for the sustainability of our institution”, Prof said.
The committee’s composition, according to him, was a deliberate effort, as members were drawn from across the university based on merit, integrity, and proven experience.
He also said the committee’s terms of reference were crafted to reflect the concerns and aspirations of the new administration, particularly in responding to the increasing demands placed on the university system.
Bako further revealed that preliminary groundworks had already begun, with various units earlier requested to submit data and reports on their revenue activities.
These submissions, he said, would form the foundation upon which the committee would begin its assignment.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof Bello Sabo, a senior professor at the Department of Finance, expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and the team.
“We are honoured to be entrusted with this very important duty. Revenue generation has become an issue of great urgency, and we assure you that we will give it our very best,” he said.
The committee was given eight weeks within which to submit its findings and recommendations.
Members of the committee include Prof Mohammed Habibu Sabari, Department of Accounting; and Malam Yahaya Husseini, Cash Office.
Others are Malam Nuhu Onimisi, Finance Office, Institute for Agricultural Research; and Malam Salisu Hamisu Ibrahim, IJMB Directorate, who will serve as Secretary.
