ABU raises committee to produce grazing policy 

     . . .  As part of measures to stop influx of animals into the University 

Ahmadu Bello University has constituted a committee to develop a grazing policy as part of measures to stop what it described as “unnecessary influx” of animals into the University for grazing purpose. 

The 11-member committee, which was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, has the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, as Chairman. 

Inaugurating the committee at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Prof. Bala explained that the committee was raised to secure the University environment. 

The Vice-Chancellor also said that the University Management intended to provide “low-key grazing fields within the University peripheral areas” in order to sustain the long existing peace with neighbouring communities. 

Other terms of reference for the committee include developing modalities of registration and monitoring of grazing activities in the University, as well as identifying possible areas to be used as grazing fields. 

It is also expected to develop a proposal for fencing the identified areas to check encroachment, as well as determine how and where the impounded animals could be kept. 

The committee is given two months to round off the assignment from the time of inauguration and turn in its report. 

The Registrar; Bursar; Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR); Director, University Health Services, Director, Veterinary Teaching Hospital; and Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are members of the Committee. 

Others include Dean, Faculty of Agriculture; Ag. Chief Security Officer; Chairman, University Tree Planting Committee; and Officer-in-Charge, Forest Guard Unit; while Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor; and Administrative Secretary, University Security Services will serve as Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively.
