ABU keeps on growing from strength to strength, says former Kano Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau

His Excellency, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State, today visited Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he graduated in 1977, saying the university was still growing from strength to strength in academic excellence.

Shekarau, who was governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011, made the remark when he called on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed.

Malam Shekarau was briefly a Minister of Education and a one time Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

He was in Ahmadu Bello University today (Monday, 11th August, 2025) to deliver a public lecture at the instance of the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS).

The lecture, entitled ‘The Future Is Now: Youth Participation in Politics, Entrepreneurship, and Social Innovation in Kano,’ was organised by the student association.

Senator Shekarau, who holds the title of Sardaunan Kano, told the Vice-Chancellor during the courtesy call that he was overwhelmed with ABU’s beautiful environment.

The former civilian governor said whenever he came to ABU he would always recall with nostalgia the institution’s vibrant academic and intellectual activities during their days as students.

“I am delighted to see the university is fast growing from strength to strength in academic programmes and physical infrastructure”, he said.

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who said he was proud of the university for its academic excellence, stressed that he would continue to be a good ambassador of the institution.

He said as a professional teacher he always took pleasure in talking face-to-face with students, which was why he accepted the invitation of Kano State students to come and give the public lecture.

Senator Shekarau also said it was quite appropriate for the elderly to always encourage the younger ones to prepare for leadership roles by sharing their experiences with them.

Receiving the former minister, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, described Shekarau’s short tenure as Minister of Education as “impactful” by upgrading some Federal Colleges of Education to universities.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was extremely excited over Shekarau’s visit to the university, expressed confidence that the lecture he would deliver would certainly motivate students.

Prof Ahmed happily told the former minister that the Kano indigenes in the employ of the university were exceedingly doing well for the growth and development of the institution.

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and his entourage were led to the Vice-Chancellor’s office by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu alongside some patrons of Kano students in Ahmadu Bello University.

They were Prof Sulaiman Abdullahi Karwai, Department of Business Administration and Prof Ibrahim A Muhammad-Dabo, Department of Chemical Engineering.

They also included Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Malam Auwalu Umar and President of ABU Student Representative Council, Ibrahim Nazeer Kallah.
