 ... As three students emerge victorious at Society of Petroleum Engineers competition in Lagos 

Foremost energy scientist, Prof S A Jonah, has won the ‘African Nuclear Energy Outstanding Performance’ award.

Prof Jonah, who is the Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University, was conferred with the award by the African Commission on Nuclear Energy.

He was honoured with the African nuclear energy outstanding performance award in Pretoria, South Africa, on 30th July, 2025 during the 16th anniversary celebration of the Pelindaba Treaty.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, announced the development at the institution’s 553rd (Regular) Senate meeting held on Thursday, 28th August, 2025.

Prof Ahmed, who was thrilled by the award won by the nuclear energy specialist, congratulated Prof Jonah on behalf of the University Senate on the remarkable achievement.

Similarly, three students and a staff from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, who participated in the annual Society of Petroleum Engineers competition emerged winners.

The university participants were declared winners at an award ceremony held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos from 4th-6th August, 2025.

Abdulrahman Abdulwasiu won the ‘Paper Contest Winner for PhD’ award while the ‘Paper Contest Winner for B.Sc.’ award went to Aliyu Abuhuraira.

Maryam Yunus Lawal clinched the ‘Girl in STEM’ award, even as the ABU chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers won the ‘Outstanding Chapter’ award.

This was also announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, at the university senate meeting.

Prof Adamu Ahmed lauded the outstanding performance and congratulated the winners on behalf of the University Senate.
