ABU initiates partnership with US, Japanese institutions to strengthen biomedical sciences

Ahmadu Bello University will collaborate with a US organisation and Japanese institutions to strengthen biomedical engineering, surgical training, medical education, and biomedical sciences at the university.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, initiated the collaboration when he served as a discussant during the roundtable discussions at the breakout session of the Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum 2026 held in Japan.

The STS forum, themed ‘Navigating Tectonic Shifts in Science, Technology, and Society’, seeks to explore how science and technology impact humanity over the next 100 to 500 years.

It is an open dialogue at which global leaders meet as individuals (not official country representatives) to hold honest discussions.

The gathering began on 4th October, 2026 and it will be rounded off on 6th October, 2026. It is taking place at Kyoto International Conference Center in Japan.

Around 1,500 leaders from over 80 countries, regions, and international organisations attend the event. They include government ministers, university Presidents/Vice-Chancellors, corporate chief executive officers, and Nobel laureates.

ABU was the only university from Nigeria that attended the STS Forum 2026 and the Vice-Chancellor was among the university Presidents/Vice-Chancellors from across the globe that served as discussants.

Equally at the roundtable discussions, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako, participated.

Prof Bako took the lead to foster partnerships with global education and research bodies aimed at repositioning ABU for greater societal and industry impacts.

Participants engage in 12 plenary sessions and 24 concurrent sessions, covering major global topics on artificial intelligence, digital technologies, cooperation, and green finance.
