Vice-Chancellor receives delegation of US-based environmental health institute
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Kabiru Bala, today (Tuesday, 5th November, 2024) received a delegation from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), North Carolina, United States of America, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
NIEHS Deputy Director, Dr. Trevor Allison Archer told the Vice-Chancellor that NIEHS is partnering with 47 institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University.
Dr. Trevor disclosed that NIEHS funds research on environmental issues globally, saying that ABU has been given grants of $818,000 with additional extension of $4,000 for research grants on maternal mortality.
ABU’s Dr. Idowu Aimola, a research leader in the project, explained that Nigeria is the country with the largest burden of maternal mortality deaths, saying that the research purpose is to redefine health care for pregnant Nigerian women to improve pregnancy outcome and birth outcome.
Researchers, according to him, are working at the Nigerian maternal placenta to redefine the placenta celltypes and to identify specific drug target that can be used for managing pregnancy complications.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, appreciated the delegation for the visit and wished them well.
Prof. Bala called on the staff of the University to attract more grants to the University.
Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Ahmadu Bello University, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, welcomed the team and thanked them for the research grants.
He expressed hope that the research grant will be used judiciously and urged for more grants to the University.
