Vice-Chancellor lauds basketball team for keeping ABU flag flying in sports

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has commended the institution’s basketball team for clinching the championship title at the thrilling 2025 Olumide Oyedeji Intercollegiate 3×3 Basketball Championship held in Lagos last month.

In an electrifying final against Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, ABU team emerged victorious with a score of 21 – 15.

ABU team showcased their unmatched skills and determination throughout the tournament, going unbeaten and proving they were a force to be reckoned with.

This year’s championship marked a significant milestone as it became the first to be officially recognised by FIBA as a registered 3×3 competition, celebrating its fourth year of bringing exciting basketball action to the court.

Receiving trophies won at the competition, the Vice-Chancellor expressed delight over the victory and urged the team to keep the ABU flag flying in sports.

Prof Ahmed also enjoined the team to maintain the tempo, “as this is the ABU’s time to take back what rightfully belongs to university”.

He urged the Chairman, ABU Sports Committee, Prof M K Aliyu, and the team, to continue to work hard so that the university would continue to maintain its standard.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako, joined the Vice-Chancellor to congratulate the team on the remarkable achievement.

Prof Bako, who commended the team for the hard work and dedication, advised that they should keep up the good work until it became a norm.

Similarly, the Dean of Students, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, urged the team to start preparation for the next round of the championship.

Prof Junaidu expressed gratitude to the team’s supporters, particularly Chief Felix Akiga and Danballe Construction Company that had been giving their best for sporting activities in ABU.

Chief Akiga presented the sum of N100,000 to the winning team and pledged to give a N500,000 prize for any basketball player that graduates with First Class in his or her field of study.

Akiga’s gesture was coming when the university is set to lay a foundation for the ABU Basketball Academy Hostel, an event billed to hold on Monday, 4th August, 2025.

The Chairman, ABU Sports Committee, Prof M K Aliyu, led the presentation of trophies to the Vice-Chancellor.
