UNESCO-ICHE delegation Visits ABU, calls on Vice Chancellor
A delegation of UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Kabiru Bala.
Leader of the delegation Prof. Jiansheng Liang said they were at the University, which is the Rotating Presidency Unit 2024 to brief the Vice Chancellor on the just-concluded National Dialogue that was aimed at guiding the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigerian higher education. The National Dialogue was held in Abuja on Thursday, 18th July, 2024.
Professor Liang, who stated that the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) is located in UNESCO, explained that the essence of the visit was to report to the Rotating President on the progress made.
He noted that UNESCO-ICHE is partnering with 49 organizations and 42 partner agencies and have branches in South Africa, Gambia and Vietnam.
The leader of the delegation also disclosed that for the remaining of the year, there are two potential upcoming dialogues they are hoping to achieve.
Prof. Liang said UNESCO-ICHE team is reviewing the quality of courses online and is expected to have five more courses online before the end of the year.
He maintained that IIOE is collaborating with experts to develop digital competency for members in 2024, which will enable other IIOE centers to be able to have access to courses online.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, thanked the delegation for the visit and wished them well in their endeavours.
Prof. Bala stated that the University is trying to live up to expectation especially with the recent development.
The Vice Chancellor appealed to the delegation for the mounting of another smart classroom because of the increasing number of students and staff population.
Also speaking, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, welcomed the delegation and assured them of the University’s support and promised to take the issue of UNESCO-ICHE to the Federal Government for proper implementation.
