NAPRI trains 28 Enugu livestock farmers on artificial insemination

The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) has trained 28 livestock farmers on artificial insemination technology.

The training, which commenced on Monday, 28th November, 2024 and was rounded off on Friday, 29th November, 2024, took place at NAPRI headquarters in Shika, Zaria.

Artificial insemination is a climate smart livestock breeding technology for rapid upgrading of indigenous livestock; and it is applied in enhancing the reproductive efficiency of livestock.

The hands-on training that lasted five days was at the instance of Enugu State government through the state’s Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).

The Permanent Secretary, Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Victor Ngwu, who led the participating livestock farmers to the training, expressed satisfaction with the programme run at NAPRI.

The State Project Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Enugu, Dr. Elizabeth Ifeyinwa Nnajieze, was ably represented by Dr Nnamani Enoch Nnaemeka, at the five-day training.

Commenting on the training programme, the representative of the L-PRES State Coordinator, Dr. Nnamani Enoch Nnaemeka, who explained that the training was facilitated by the L-PRES, said they came to learn practically the use of artificial insemination technology.

Dr. Nnameka, who expressed great delight for taking all the 28 participants round the various sections of the institute to see things for themselves, described NAPRI as an “excellent training ground” for livestock development.

Nnameka pointed out that there was no political consideration in the selection of participants for the programme as the Enugu government is only interested in any venture that would help improve the livestock subsector of the state.

The Head, Artificial Insemination Unit, National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Dr. Yusha’u Usman Abubakar, presided over the training session along with other experts from the Institute.

Speaking on the artificial insemination technology, Dr. Yusha’u explained that the technology ensures a sound and efficient management of breeding males and females and the ultimate efficient rearing of the calves in climate smart systems.

“This results in enhancing farmer income, household and national food security”, he said.

The head of the institute’s artificial insemination unit commended the participants for the keen interest they had shown at every stage of the training and expressed appreciation to Enugu L-PRES for the patronage.

The practical training programmes offered by NAPRI, according to him, had continued to attract farmers, intellectuals and researchers from all over the country and beyond for livestock development.
