NAPRI, Arla Dairy Products Ltd sign pact on research, training, dairy activities

The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) and Arla Global Dairy Products Limited have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding on research, training, and all activities related to the Nigerian dairy sector.

NAPRI is a component part of Ahmadu Bello University with a national mandate to conduct research and training on increasing productivity of livestock and poultry through breeding, nutrition, management and socio-economic interventions in Nigeria.

The Lagos-based dairy firm is part of the Arla Foods Group of Company established with the sole purpose of processing and packaging of milk products in Nigeria.

The dairy company is also interested in supporting local dairy farming by providing its expertise towards processing and marketing of milk and other local dairy products.

Prof. Kabiru Bala, Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, signed the pact on behalf of NAPRI in the presence of the institute’s Executive Director, Prof. Muhammad Rabiu Hassan. Senior Manager, Arla Global Dairy Products Ltd, Mr. Snorri Sigurdsson stood in for the company with the firm’s Managing Director, Mr. Peder Pedersen, as witness.

The parties, according to the MoU, agreed to jointly conduct field research on sown pastures both introduced and native species; training on pasture and dairy value chains; laboratory analysis on animal feeds and products; as well as breeding through the use of artificial insemination and embryo transfer technology.

On NAPRI obligation, the animal research institute will among others plan and conduct pasture field research on the Arla farm in Damau and that the research result shall be owned by NAPRI which shall be allowed to conduct other field and multi-locational trials.

On its own part, the dairy products company shall allocate a special area of its farm for NAPRI trials and testings in addition to inviting the institute to send students, researchers and teachers to come to the farm to learn about different aspects for dairy farming and do research, both within production and animal health/behaviour.
