Co-founder of Integrity Organization speaks at ABU public lecture

An international political economy analyst and corporate governance expert as well as co-founder of Integrity Organization, and the Convention on Business Integrity, Olusoji Apampa, was a guest speaker at a public lecture held in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The lecture, themed “Integrity for Fostering a Conducive Environment for ‘Ease of doing Business’ and National Development”, took place at CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, ABU, Zaria at the weekend.

It was organised by the Faculty of Management Sciences in collaboration with ABU Business School. It was sponsored by Fortune Charitable Foundation.

Apampa’s presentation stimulated meaningful discussions and inspired participants to embrace integrity as core value in their personal and professional lives.

He reiterated the role of integrity in improving Nigeria’s business and investment climate, as well as its foundation for effective corporate governance and public sector accountability.

Issues bordering ethical leadership and institutional reforms as they relate with sustainable national development were discussed.

The issues were discussed alongside the requisite and practical strategies involved in promoting integrity in both public and private sector organization.

Olusoji Apampa’s presentation capped the lecture up by dwelling on the responsibilities of university in nurturing graduates who embody integrity, work ethics, professionalism, and accountability.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, expressed delight on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, Staff, and students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Prof Ahmed, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, described the lecture as an important one.

This is because “the Faculty of Management Sciences occupies a central place in the university, cutting across professionals in accounting, management, insurance, auditing, finance, marketing, and actuarial science”.

He emphasized that these areas are not abstract disciplines confined in textbooks only.

“They are areas that truly determine whether an insurance claim is settled fairly, or an audit uncovers what it should and report it with integrity; or a firm’s account reflects its true position; and investment decision is seen to rest on sound financial analysis rather than guesswork”, he said.

He said a university that trains these professionals carries a direct responsibility for the integrity of the economy.

“We are fortunate to have Mr. Olusoji Apampa in ABU whom from the background check can be said to be one of the few individuals in Nigeria that have devoted their time and career to the practical work of embedding integrity into how business and institutions operate, rather than simply writing about it”, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the organizers to find ways of bringing the outcome of the discussions to wider conversation and not remain confined to the lecture hall.

“Ideas produced in this lecture hall in today’s event are not worth anything, until they reach out to policy makers, regulators and business leaders who can act on them”, he also said.

The lecture was chaired by the Director ABU Business School, Prof. Auwalu Haruna.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Dr. Muhammed Mustapha Bagudo, thanked the university management and the Vice-Chancellor for the support they received.
