My approach to leadership of Ahmadu Bello University, by new Vice-Chancellor

The new Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, says his approach to leadership will be anchored on consultation, collaboration and accountability.

“I will listen more than I speak and I will act decisively when action is required”, he said when he addressed the University community at a special meeting of the institution’s Senate that was held today (Tuesday, 6th May, 2025).

He said that he would remain committed to “foster an environment where academic freedom thrives, merit is rewarded, and transparency is not only optional but also essential”.

The Vice-Chancellor also promised to encourage innovation, constructive criticism and intellectual independence.

Prof Ahmed, who took over from Prof Kabiru Bala as ABU”s Vice-Chancellor last week, disclosed that he would insist on discipline, responsibility, and excellence.

His administration, according to him, would not tolerate mediocrity or misconduct in any form.

He urged all staff to keep their emotions and sentiments within control and ensure frustrations were resolved within the confines of the University.

According to him, every staff member of the University either academic or non-teaching, should rise to the highest standards of his/her professional and ethical conduct.

Prof Ahmed stressed that his administration would build a university where leadership was earned through service, integrity and result not granted by convenience or routine.

“We must all rise to the challenge of shaping an institution that inspires confidence, demands, excellence and rewards commitment”, he said.
