Minister tasks NAPRI on production of 10 million eggs per week for Nigerian markets

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has tasked National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) to target the production of more than 10 million eggs per week for Nigerian markets.

Speaking when the institute’s Executive Director, Prof. Mohammed Rabiu Hassan led his management team on a courtesy visit to the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, the Minister commended the efforts of NAPRI and Ahmadu Bello University for maintaining the spirit of research, teaching, and development against all odds.

The visit was an interaction between the Ministry’s top officials led by the Minister and members of NAPRI team who made different presentations on the institute’s history, mandate, vision, mission, and notable accomplishments.

The interaction, which was held on Tuesday, 18th February, 2025, was at the instance of the Minister.

Maiha also encouraged the institute to strengthen and intensify its collaborations and partnership with different key actors in the livestock value chain such as National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) and ARLA, an international dairy company.

This, according to the Minister, is with a view to scaling-up production and supply of improved livestock and pasture seeds to the entire West African region.

The Minister, who pledged to assist in repositioning and reinvigorating NAPRI for improved productivity, emphasised on the need for production of old-day chicks of Shika Brown and pasture seeds.

He recalled that NAPRI was established essentially to be a national centre for capacity building, training of stakeholders in livestock value-chains and quality pasture seeds production.

Alhaji Maiha further stated that with the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development last year, a new frontier is opened for livestock production in Nigeria.

“Already, the new Ministry has approached more than 12 state governors seeking 5,000 hectares of land for pasture development to address the issue of farmer-herder clash due to feeds scarcity,” he said.

The NAPRI team, led by its Executive Director, Prof. Mohammed Rabiu Hassan, comprised Deputy Director, Dr. Muhammad Sa’idu Tanko; Programme Leader, Poultry Research, Dr. Idris Abdullahi; Programme Leader, Feeds and Nutrition Research, Dr. Sabo Abubakar; and Head, Animal Health Unit, Dr. Zakariyya Wunti.
