Conduct yourselves well as you study in ABU, VC counsels fresh students

The newly admitted students of Ahmadu Bello University have been told to conduct themselves well as they settle down for study in the oldest university in the north of the country.

Speaking during the students central orientation for the 2023/2024 academic session at Mamman Kontagora Square, Main Campus, Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Zaria, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, also urged them to focus strictly on their purpose of being admitted.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Ibrahim Doko, enjoined the students to respect the rules and regulations of the University, so as to enjoy their stay in the institution.

Prof. Bala stressed that the University Management is deeply committed towards achieving excellence and that it would spare no students found wanting.

He further advised them to shun alcohol, bad influences from other people within and outside the University, and avoid membership of secret cults.

Prof. Bala also called on the students to be security conscious and to report any suspicious objects or movement around the vicinity either in the hostel or academic areas.

He similarly charged them to maintain their good health and warned them of the preponderance of sexually transmitted diseases and the dreaded Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDs).

In his address, the Dean Student Affairs Division, Prof. Mohammed Y. Fatihu, reminded the students of their purpose of coming to the University to acquire knowledge and skills for a better future.

The Dean challenged them to cultivate the culture of peaceful co-existence on the Campus for a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning.

Also speaking, the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, who congratulated the students on being among the few lucky ones to have secured admissions into the University, explained that the orientation was organised to serve as a guide into the academic environment.

Earlier in her address of welcome, the Director Counselling and Human Development Centre, Dr. Sa’adatu Makarfi, said that the centre served as an academic and career development outfit that explores career opportunities for students.

“To support your academic success, the University has an outstanding lecturers and non-teaching staff who are dedicated to provide you with the best education”, she said.

Dr. Sa’adatu urged the students to take advantage of the resources available such as library, technology centre and other school programmes.

“Remember education is a journey not a destination and with hard work, perseverance and a growth mindset you can achieve anything”, she stressed.
