ABU student wins visa to visit Germany for emerging best in Bayer ‘Safe Use of Pesticide’ competition
Florence Mathew, a final year student of the Faculty of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has been granted a visa to visit Bayer Headquarters in Germany for emerging as the best student in promoting safe and responsible use of pesticide.
The Bayer Safe Use Ambassador presented the travel documents to the student through the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, at a colourful but brief ceremony at the Vice-Chancellor’s office today (Thursday, 31st October, 2024).
The Vice-Chancellor immediately handed over the travel documents to her in the presence of some management staff of the University, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Ahmed Doko Ibrahim; the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila; and the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Salisu Abdu Bakura.
According to the travel arrangements, Florence Mathew is expected to leave Nigeria for Germany on Saturday, 16th November, 2024 having emerged the best in the Bayer competition.
Bayer Safe Use Ambassador project is a programme designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote the safe and responsible use of pesticides in their communities.
Bayer trained a total of 266 students of the Faculty of Agriculture on safe use of crop protection products during the session on Safe Use Ambassador Program in Nigeria, which was incorporated into the Faculty’s field practical training programme of 2023.
Through the programme, participants gain a deeper understanding of the potential risk associated with improper use of pesticides, as well as the best practices for safe handling, storage and disposal.
Students, who participated in the programme are expected to use the knowledge acquired in educating others on the importance of safe pesticide use and making a positive impact on the industry.
Receiving the travel documents, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the student and commended the organisation for choosing the University.
Ahmadu Bello University, according to the Vice-Chancellor, has the best Agric Complex, better than many universities of agriculture in the country.
He enjoined the student to be well-behaved and be a good ambassador of the University wherever she finds herself.
