ABU Samaru College of Agriculture matriculates students for 2024/2025 academic session
Samaru College of Agriculture, Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, has matriculated students for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The matriculation ceremony took place at the College premises, Samaru, Zaria.
Speaking at the ceremony, the College Provost, Prof Usman AbdulKarim, disclosed that the College was the oldest of the three Colleges under the Division.
The College, according to him, was established in 1921.
Prof Usman also said that it began as an Agricultural Training Centre at Maigana, and in 1932 was relocated to Samaru and renamed ‘Samaru College of Agriculture’.
The Provost stated that the College was the first agricultural institution in Northern Nigeria and the second oldest in the entire nation.
He said that for over a century, the institution had trained thousands of agricultural professionals, many of whom have risen to prominence in Nigeria and across the African continent.
Prof Usman emphasized that graduates of the Colleges had left their mark in federal and state ministries, academia, private sector, and many other places.
The Provost maintained that the mission of the College was to produce skilled, competent, and entrepreneurial agricultural professionals equipped to drive Nigeria’s agricultural transformation through quality education, training, and research.
He cautioned the newly matriculated students to be responsible, dedicated, and open to learning.
The Provost congratulated the students and urged them to shun examination malpractice and cultism.
In his remarks, the Director, Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University,, Prof B.A Babaji, described agriculture as the backbone of human civilization for thousands of years.
Prof Babaji said that over the course of their studies, the students would gain skills and knowledge necessary to address some pressing challenges facing the country, continent and the entire world.
The Director further said that the students would also learn how to manage farms, conserve natural resources, ensure safe and efficient production of food and build resilient systems.
He said that it was expected that their venturing into agriculture would also go a long way in solving the insecurity challenges bedeviling the nation through creation of equitable wealth.
According to him, the Higher National Diploma was not just a certificate, but also a tool that would equip students to become leaders in the agricultural sector.
Prof Babaji congratulated the students, as they embarked on a remarkable academic journey and wished them well in their studies.
