ABU rejoices with Prof Iya Abubakar on 90th birthday
Ahmadu Bello University has joined family members, friends, and well-wishers of Prof Iya Abubakar in celebrating his 90th birthday.
Abubakar’s 90th birthday celebration took place at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja today (Saturday, 14th December, 2024) with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and former Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Boni Haruna, in attendance.
The Dean of Students, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Junaidu B Sahalu, who led a management delegation to the memorable occasion, represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabiru Bala.
The Director, Iya Abubakar Institute of ICT, Malam Shuaibu Umar, and the Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar, were on the delegation.
Prof Sahalu, who presented a letter of felicitation to the celebrant on behalf of management, staff, and students of Ahmadu Bello University, explained that ABU would continue to cherish and remember his meritorious services to the institution.
Sahalu also said the naming of the university’s ambitious ICT institute (Iya Abubakar Institute of ICT) after him was clearly in recognition of his selfless service to the institution.
The event featured an exhibition of 77 portraits of the renowned mathematics professor taken at different stages of his life, including those when he was at Barewa College, University College Ibadan, Cambridge University, Ahmadu Bello University (as Vice-Chancellor), and many other places.
It also featured the cutting of the birthday cake by the celebrant who was assisted by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Abubakar Sadiq Ribadu, Prof Iya Abubakar’s grand son, read the citation of the celebrant at the occasion.
Abubakar Ribadu described his grandfather as a living legend and a national treasure, who as ABU Vice-Chancellor transformed the institution into a powerhouse of learning.
The Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria and Nigeria Computer Society organised the birthday celebration in honour of the former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Iya Abubakar.
