ABU most diverse in admission and recruitment in Nigeria, says House of Reps
The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has praised Ahmadu Bello University for being the most diverse and representative in admission and recruitment across all regions in Nigeria.
The committee made the commendation during an interaction between it and members of the university management when the legislators visited the institution for oversight assignment.
Speaking during the interface, Hon. Abubakar Hassan Fulata said the singular act of being national by the university aligned with the provisions of Section 14 (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
According to Hon. Fulata, the section stated that the composition and conduct of the Federal Government universities must reflect Nigeria’s federal character to foster national unity and loyalty.
Hon. Fulata is the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on University Education. He is representing Birniwa/Guri/Kiri-Kasamma federal constituency (Jigawa State) at the House.
The committee also commended the university for consistently carrying forward balances across all financial statements.
The legislators further praised the institution for establishing and overseeing the IJMB examinations, an effort they described as a unifying pillar.
The chairman explained that the committee was saddled with the responsibility of carrying out on-the-spot assessment visits to all federal universities and other agencies under its oversight across the country.
He said the committee was also charged to expose inefficiency with a view to ensuring that university operations were carried out in line with the provisions of the law.
In his closing remarks at the interface, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the committee for the encomiums showered on the university for its national outlook.
The Vice-Chancellor, ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Prof Raymond B Bako, acknowledged all the observations made by the committee on the submission by the university.
He assured the committee that the university management was committed to amending all the deficiencies identified in the submission.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research, and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Rafindadi Aliyu; the Registrar, Rabiu Samaila; and Bursar, Malam Muhammad Aminu Bello Gurin, participated in the interaction.
Others present included the Ag. University Librarian, Dr Abubakar Mohammed Abdullahi; the Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Prof Bello Mukhtar; and Director, Public Affairs Directorate, Auwalu Umar.
