ABU marks 2025 World Environmental Day
Ahmadu Bello University Tree Planting and Environmental Sustainability Committee has marked this year’s (2025) World Environmental Day.
The event, with the theme; “Ending Plastic Solution” took place today, Thursday, 5th June, 2025.
Speaking at the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, stated that the event was celebrated today (Thursday, 5th June, 2025) worldwide.
Represented by the Dean, Students Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, the Vice-Chancellor noted that the University was known for celebrating the World Environmental Day annually.










Prof Ahmed congratulated members of the ABU Tree Planting and Environmental Sustainability Committee and urged them to continue with the tradition.
In a presentation, titled; “Plastic Pollution and the Environment/Tree Planting”, a former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof I A Mohammed-Dabo, disclosed that the World Environmental Day was marked globally to reduce pollution.
Prof Dabo emphasized that everyone needed to be responsible in preventing pollution using plastics.
He enjoined students to be responsible in the utilization of plastics.
According to him, Ahmadu Bello University was the pride of the nation in terms of environmental conservation.
In another presentation, titled “Role of Students in the Circular Economy in ABU Zaria, the Dean Students Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, explained that Nigeria generated over 2.5 millions tonnes of plastic annually.
Prof Sahalu stressed that Nigerians, particularly students needed to throw away culture and embrace a circular economy.
The Dean advised students to convert recycling into entrepreneurship by joining the advocacy of educating others.
He also underscored the significance of leveraging on technology, through the creation of matchmaking apps.
In a closing, the Chairman of the Ahmadu Bello University Tree Planting and Environmental Sustainability Committee, Dr. S K Musa, stressed that celebrating the World Environmental Day was an opportunity aimed at ending plastic pollution.
Dr. Musa thanked all participants and students, as well as wished them safe journey back to their various destinations.
Highpoints of the event were goodwill messages, group photographs and inspection of the waste collection kiosks.
