ABU lauds law students victory at ECOWAS Moot Court competition
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has congratulated students of the institution’s Faculty of Law on winning the top prize of five million Naira at the just-concluded maiden edition of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Moot Court competition.
The students competition was held at the Zuma Rock Resort in Abuja last Saturday.
The ECOWAS Court of Justice Moot Court competition is meant to educate young lawyers and create awareness on the activities of the West African regional bloc.







It is also meant to build the capacity of young lawyers and prepare them for the task ahead.
Receiving the winning students in his office today, Monday, 16th June, 2025, the Vice-Chancellor expressed delight over the resounding victory.
Ahmed said he was happy that the students had further proven to the larger society that the university remained one of the best.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the leadership of the Faculty of Law under Prof Salim Bashir Magashi, saying that the university was prioritising academic excellence and mentorship.
While wishing the students the best of luck in subsequent competitions, Prof Ahmed assured the Faculty and students of the university’s continuous support each time they proved themselves.
Briefing the Vice-Chancellor earlier on the students success at the competition, the Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof Salim Bashir Magashi, explained that the students received an invitation through the Faculty to participate in the competition.
He said that the students presented a memorial, which came out to be the best among all the memorials presented at the competition.
The Dean disclosed that the students received a prize of one million Naira for presenting the best memorial and five million Naira for emerging the overall best.
The Faculty, according to him, had also received another invitation for another competition in South Africa. He said that they were hoping to participate when the time came.
Prof Magashi assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty’s commitment to maintaining the academic excellence of the university.
Also speaking, the leader of the students delegation, Dr Umar Sani Bebeji, disclosed that the outcome of the competition was not by chance, but also a deliberate attempt by the Faculty in maintaining the standard of the university.
Dr Bebeji said that the university had given licence for students to excel and that they were taking that advantage.
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, stated that ABU’s strength was in agriculture, engineering and law.
Prof Rafindadi expressed happiness that the Faculty had proven its academic excellence and urged that competitions like this that should be formalised so that funds could be budgeted for them.
Equally speaking, the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, congratulated the Faculty and the students on the significant milestone and enjoined them to maintain the tempo.
The Dean, Students Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, said in his remarks that the victory of the students was the fourth in 2025.
Sahalu was hopeful that with the present structure under the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Advancement, Research and Innovation, mentorship and financial support would be provided to students for them to continue to excel.
Highpoints of the occasion were presentation of plagues and dummy cheque to the Vice-Chancellor and group photographs.
