ABU Institute of Education holds career talk for Secondary School students in Samaru, Bomo

The Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, has organised a career talk for Secondary School students in the neighbouring communities.

The career talk took place at Government Girls Secondary School, Samaru, and Government Secondary School, Bomo on Thursday, 6th November, 2025.

The programme was specifically targeted at both male and female students of Senior Secondary Schools who are in the second and final years of their studies.

It was also aimed at guiding them on what they would want to be in life after leaving secondary school.

Relevant career issues were discussed during the talk. These included lead questions that would assist them make right choices in terms of indication of interest, planning, skills, and acquisition of certain level of education.

Prof Sani Sambo, the Head of Division, Science Education, made presentation at Government Girls Secondary School, Samaru.

He was assisted by Dr. Ya’u Tanimu, Head Information, Linkages, and Collaboration of the Institute.

Sambo’s presentation dwelled on setting a foundation on how students would achieve greatness in life.

This, he said, would be possible by investing enough time for studies and by being consistent with other relevant aspects of life that involved skills.

He emphasized that students were not expected to give up when faced with problems, as according to him, “failure creates a lot of pathways for challenges”.

He also spoke on how the business mogul and Africa’s richest man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, started by borrowing N500,000 from his grandfather to establish a business.

Sambo equally cited how the owner of KFC made it in life after perpetual failure but in the end he finally succeeded through resilience.

Prof Sambo also spoke on the resilience and consistency of the owner of ALBA-BELLO company which made him rise to prominence.

At Goverment Secondary School, Bomo, it was Dr. Ahmed Y. Jibrin, Examinations Officer and Head of ICT, that made the presentation. He was supported by Dr Hashim Suleiman, Head of Training.

Career counselling featured prominently in their separate presentations.

They explained how it was important for students to find out whether they have the capacity to excel in a given programme of study or not.

They advised that students should not go to where there is competition.

Those going for academic career were told to start by indicating interest and must pass the ‘O’ levels with credit in English and Mathematics.

Professions like engineering, quantity surveying, architecture, medicine, pharmacy, nursing sciences, law, mass communication, accounting and others were described as self-employed courses.

All the relevant subject combinations for the courses in WAEC and JAMB, for example, were clearly explained to assist the students in making informed choices.

In both schools, question and answer sessions were allowed to enable the students to interact with the resource persons.

Managements of the two secondary schools thanked the resource persons, Institute of Education, and Ahmadu Bello University in general for the career programme.

The programme, they believed, would go along way in assisting the students make good career choices.
