ABU inaugurates two c’ttees on directorate system

Ahmadu Bello University has inaugurated two committees on the directorate system. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, presided over the inauguration which took place separately.

Prof. M.N. Maiturare of the Department of Actuarial Science and Insurance will chair the Committee on the Implementation of the Directorate System in the Registry Department while Mechanical Engineering Department’s Prof. Mohammed Dauda is to chair the Committee on the Restructuring of Administrative Units under the Vice-Chancellor into the Directorate System.

Inaugurating the committee on the implementation of the directorate system in the Registry Department, the Vice-Chancellor told the committee members that they were expected to address all outstanding issues and propose a clear path to full implementation.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the committee was raised following the approval of the University Council for the implementation of the directorate system in the Registry Department, saying that they were expected to fast-track the process.

He also stated that the Council’s decision was aimed at expanding opportunities for staff career progression and aligning administrative practices with best practices, saying however that since the approval was granted implementation had been slow with several operational and structural challenges emerging.

The committee, which has six weeks within which to submit its report from the date of inauguration, has 10 terms of reference that include, among others, review of the Council’s approval for the implementation of the directorate system, tenure in post, and implementation modalities.

Prof. M.K. Othman, National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Service; Malam Hamza Sani, Registry Department and Prof. Hamza A. Yusuf, Department of Public Administration are members of the committee.

Others are Malam Saminu Lawan, Registry Department; and Malam Usman Shehu Lawan also of the Registry Department, who will serve as Secretary of the committee.

Equally inaugurating the Committee on the Restructuring of the Administrative Units under the Vice-Chancellor into the Directorate System, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, explained that the committee was constituted to “advise on the restructuring of administrative units directly answerable to the Vice-Chancellor”.

He said that the initiative was part of the University’s broader efforts to modernise its governance architecture, enhance career progression opportunities for administrative staff, and improve the efficiency and responsiveness of service delivery at the highest level of University management.

The eight-member committee has 10 terms of reference and it has eight weeks to within which submit its findings and recommendations from the date of inauguration.

It is to, among others, review existing structure, propose a directorate model, identify key positions, career progression, and implementation roadmap.

Members of the committee include Malam Yakubu A. Anivbassa, Registry; Prof. Musa Idris, Public Administration, and Prof. Jinjiri Kabir Ringim, Department of Business Administration.

They also include Prof. (Mrs) N.H. Madugu, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Engr. Aminu Sambo, Physical Planning and Municipal Services; Mrs. Janet Kwaga, Registry; and Malam Musa Adamu from Registry who is to serve as Secretary.

In their responses, the chairmen of the two committees expressed appreciation to the University Management for the confidence reposed in them and assured that they would carry out the assignments in line with the terms of reference given them.
