ABU ICERFE, Opay empower 100 host community women

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria International Centre of Excellence for Rural Finance and Enterprenuership (ICERFE) and Opay Digital Services have empowered a total of 100 host women community as part of efforts toward eradicating poverty.

The brief but colourful event took place at ICERFE building on Monday, 24th March, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, encouraged the beneficiaries to ensure sustainability to minimise the possibility of failure in future.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof. Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi stressed that the main objective of the training programme was to empower mothers of the society.

Congratulating the best 50 selected beneficiaries to be presented with the starter packs, Prof. Bala commended their dedication and commitment during the training.

In his remark, the Director ICERFE, Dr. Idris Bashir Bugaje, said the training was to empower women, foster entrepreneurship, as well as strengthen communities.

“Today we celebrate the 100 remarkable women who have dedicated their time and effort to learn contents creation, agribusiness (fish farming and poultry farms, catering, leather works and tailoring,” said Bugaje.

Dr. Bugaje emphasised that the training was a pathway to economic independence and sustainable livelihoods.

He then appreciated Opay Digital Services for their financial support and commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, describing the initiative as a testament to playing a vital role in community development.

According to him, through Opay’s generosity lives are being transformed, business are being built and communities are being empowered.

“You stand ready to apply what you have learned. However, training alone is not enough, success will come by utilising and expanding those skills, he also said.

Bugaje encouraged beneficiaries to overcome all challenges as entrepreneurship requires determination, creativity and adaptability.

In his address, representative of Opay Digital Services, Head of Marketing Mr. Kunle Adeyemi, said they were excited to be part of this laudable programme for building a more economic society.

He then thanked the Vice-Chancellor and staff for the opportunity to contribute to many lives, and wished for more collaborations with the University.
