ABU Gender Policy Unit holds maiden symposium to create awareness on breast cancer, women empowerment

Ahmadu Bello University Gender Policy Unit will hold a maiden symposium to create awareness on breast cancer and women empowerment for female students, alumni, and women in host communities.

Christened, ‘Women and Society: Creating Awareness on Breast Cancer and Women Empowerment’, the event will take place on Monday, 4th August, 2025.

It is to be held at the Auditorium of Postgraduate College, Ahmadu Bello University, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria.

Hajiya Fatima Dikko Umar Radda, wife of the Executive Governor of Katsina State, will be the Chairperson of the Day.

The information about the symposium was contained in a flyer released by the Coordinator, Gender Policy Unit, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Rahanatu Lawal.

On the rationale for the one – day occasion, Prof Lawal, asserted that women in Northern Nigeria faced systemic barriers to education, economic participation, and leadership.

She also said that despite ABU’s strides in gender inclusion, female students and graduates often encountered challenges such as limited postgraduate tracking, leading to gaps in measuring career outcomes.

Dr Aminat Jimoh, Department of Surgery, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital; and Hajiya Rabi Kabiru, an entrepreneur from Kunkuyi, will be the guest speakers.

Executive Director, Centre for Democratic Development Research and Training, Dr Abubakar Saddique, is to serve as special guest of honour while the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, is the chief host for the event.
