ABU constitutes c’ttee to review fire safety measures
. Following recent fire incidents in the universityWorried by the recent fire incidents within the university environment, Ahmadu Bello University has raised a committee to review the institution’s fire safety and disaster preparedness.
The eight-member committee has Prof Ibrahim Ali Mohammed Dabo of the Department of Chemical Engineering as Chairman.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, inaugurated the committee at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room today (Wednesday, 24th December, 2025).
He said the decision to constitute the committee was informed by the recent fire incidents within the university environment, leading to the loss of a residential building.
This, according to him, raised serious concerns about the university’s preparedness to prevent, respond to, and recover from disaster events.
Prof Ahmed explained that the committee was set up to examine the remote and immediate causes of the incidents.
The Vice-Chancellor said the committee was to also assess the state of disaster preparedness, and recommend practical measures to strengthen the institution’s safety and emergency response systems.
The committee’s Terms of Reference include incident review, risk mapping and identification of high-risk zones, assessment of fire safety infrastructure and electrical safety.
Others are review of emergency response coordination and communication systems.
They also include evaluation of policies, training and drills, and submission of a costed action plan with an implementation and accountability framework.
The Vice-Chancellor charged chairman of the committee to provide leadership and strategic direction to the committee in the discharge of its assignment.
Responding, the chairman of the committee, Prof Ibrahim Ali Mohammed Dabo, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for the confidence they had in them.
Prof Dabo prayed that all units of the university would give the committee all the needed support as they would be involved in carrying out the task.
Members of the committee include Prof Bulus Ajiya Sawa, Department of Geography; Prof Abdelmalik A Amoka, Department of Physics; and Dr Muhammad Auwal Adamu, Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Others are Dr Sunday Habila, Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Prof Abdulsalam Dalhat, Department of Building; and Engr. Shuaibu Musa, Department of Chemical Engineering.
Mr. Bitrus Galmaka Istifanus of the Registry Department will serve as Secretary of the committee.
The committee is expected to submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report in six weeks from the date of inauguration.
