ABU, Glasgow varsity to collaborate on joint teaching, research grant promotion, others
. Just as University of Salford agrees to mount virtual training on entrepreneurship and skills acquisition for ABU community
Ahmadu Bello University and University of Glasgow (UofG) in the United Kingdom have agreed to collaborate on student exchange programme, joint teaching, joint supervision of postgraduate students, and promotion of joint research grant and funds.
This was the outcome of the meeting of the Vice-Chancellors of the two universities at the University of Glasgow (UofG) recently. The meeting was anchored by UofG’s Prof Harry de Koning.
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, had recently led a team from the institution to the University of Glasgow and University of Salford in the United Kingdom to engage in high-level exploratory discussions.
The discussions aimed at advancing current individual partnerships into comprehensive inter-institutional linkages.
Under the student exchange programme, selected ABU students will have the opportunity to visit relevant research units of the University of Glasgow for up to six months.
The collaboration on the joint teaching will have UofG professors participating in teaching specific modules in Ahmadu Bello University and vice versa.
Under the joint postgraduate students supervision, UofG professors will be co-supervisors to ABU postgraduate students and have access to research facilities at UofG.
To this effective, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is being prepared by management of the University of Glasgow.
Similarly, the University of Salford (UofS), the United Kingdom has agreed to mount virtual training on entrepreneurship and skills acquisition for ABU community.
The development, which followed discussion between ABU team and several research groups at School of Science, Engineering, and Environment, will be through UofS professors – Ian Goodhead, Niroshini Nirmalan, and Godwin Ebiloma.
In turn, the University of Salford had requested for relevant experts at Ahmadu Bello University to teach specialized topics on tropical medicine at uofS.
At UofS, the Centre Leader, Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB), Prof YKE Ibrahim, spoke on Alliance for NCD and NTDs Comorbidities (ANNCo).
ANNCo is the ACENTDFB’s planned consortium on neglected tropical diseases and non-communicable diseases.
After Prof Ibrahim’s presentation, a number of principal investigators at both UofG and UofS expressed willingness to be part of the ANNCo.
It was also agreed that ACENTDFB will participate in the validation and clinical trials of a repositioned antimalarial drug.
In all the meetings at the two UK universities, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, reiterated ABU support for the success of the agreed plans.
It was agreed that the collaborations should be extended to other ABU faculties, particularly Social Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, and Administration, as well as other research institutes and units, including NAPRI, IAR, and ABUTH.
Prof Ahmed encouraged all ABU staff and students to become acquainted with the academic and research activities at both UofG and UofS.
The UK visit was based on the productive collaborations between some academic staff of Ahmadu Bello University and two UK universities – University of Glasgow and University of Salford.
The Centre Leader, Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB), Prof YKE Ibrahim, was on the Vice-Chancellor’s entourage.
Others were Principal Investigator, ACENTDFB, Prof Iliya Ndams; and Prof Emmanuel Oluwadare Balogun of the Department of Biochemistry.
