ABU Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences launches official journal

 . To advance the frontiers of biomedical and clinical research

The Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, College of Medical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, has launched an official journal to advance the frontiers of biomedical and clinical research in Nigeria and across Africa.

The journal, titled ‘Annals of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine (ALCM)’, was officially unveiled today (Tuesday, 28th October, 2025) by the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed.

It was launched at the 1st Faculty Day and 8th Anniversary of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University.

The maiden edition of the journal was launched right inside the Red Seat Lecture Hall, Clinical Skills Laboratory, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria.

Launching the journal, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, commended the faculty and the editorial team for floating the publication to promote research on the medical field.

Prof Ahmed, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, also urged the faculty to sustain the publication given its significance to medical research and other related areas.

The Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Prof Abdulaziz Hassan, said in his brief remarks on the journal that the publication aimed to promote a culture of collaboration, critical inquiry, and academic rigor among scientists, clinicians, and students.

According to him, the journal also sought to strengthen the bridge between basic science and clinical medicine through the exchange of ideas across various disciplines.

He further said the publication would now provide a dedicated platform for the dissemination of original scientific discoveries, critical reviews, and translational research that connect laboratory findings with patient care.

The journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Prof Saad Aliyu Ahmed, explained in his editorial comment that the publication was conceived as an translational platform to bridge discoveries from the laboratory bench to patient’s bedside.

Prof Ahmad also said the journal welcomed high-quality contributions from disciplines spanning medical microbiology, pathology, hematology, clinical chemistry, clinical pharmacology, and other emerging areas that advance the frontiers of biomedical science.

Dr Shamsudin Aliyu of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, is the journal’s Deputy Editor-in-Chief.

Also on the journal’s editorial crew are six Associate Editors namely Prof Almustapha Aliyu Liman, Department of Pathology; Prof Mohammed EL-Bashir Jibril, Department of Chemical Pathology; and Prof Sani Awwalu, Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Others are Prof Fatima Jummai Giwa, Department of Medical Microbiology; Prof Onyeadumarakwe Reginald Obiako, Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics; and Dr Abdulfatai Kayode Ogunkunle, Department of Chemical Pathology.

Equally, the journal has four distinguished medical scholars on its Advisory Board that include former Chief Medical Director, ABUTH, Prof Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi of the Department of Pathology.

Prof Ibrahim Sambo Aliyu, Department of Chemical Pathology; Prof Aisha Indo Mamman, Department of Basic Clinical Sciences; and Prof Taiwo Lateef Sheikh, are also on the board.
