The College of Medical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University has inducted 81 students into the medical profession.

The induction ceremony took place at Abdullahi Mahadi Conference Centre, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria.

In a welcome address, the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof M.S Shehu, said the induction ceremony signified the transition from medical students to house officers.

Prof Shehu stated that the essence of housemanship was to prepare the doctors for independent practice.

He empathised that “where there is love for humanity there is love for medicine”.

The Provost congratulated parents, guardians and the entire staff of the College for supporting the students in one way or another during the course of their study.

He called on the students to uphold patient confidentiality as well as read, understand, and apply the code of ethics through out their medical practice.

While urging them to be good ambassadors of ABU, the Provost wished them a successful career and service to humanity.

In a remark, the Chairman of the Occasion Prof Kabiru Bala, commended the students for their hard work and perseverance while striving for excellence during their time as medical students.

He explained that the induction was a testament of their journey.

Prof Bala called on them to be critical thinkers, innovators and advocates for the wellbeing of the society while urging them never to stop learning so as to stay abreast with latest medical developments.

He called on them to always look back and give back to ABU as the institution that shaped them.

There was a paper presentation titled “Medical Practice in Resource Limited Settings: the Social Responsibility of a Physician”. It was presented by Prof Oladapo Sunday Shittu.

Shittu, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, said there were so many challenges in the practice of medicine generally and much more in a resource limited setting like Nigeria.

Prof Shittu said apart from inavailability of infrastructure, as doctors, they would encounter patients that are culturally not in tune with preventive health practices but rather curative.

He said another effect of being in a resource limited environment was that “expectations and demand from immediate family to the entire community would be high and you wil be expected to always offer expert advice any day anytime”.

The lecturer called on the fresh doctors to uphold respect and dignity, dedicate their life to service for humanity, practice with conscience and honor the traditions of medical practice.

Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), ABUTH, Prof Ahmed Hamidu Umdagas, said the hospital took pride in providing students with conducive environment to learn and become the best medical personnel.

Represented by Prof M.B. Aliyu, the CMD assured all students of a slot for their house jobs in ABUTH as they would be giving priority to ABU medical students first before others.

He congratulated the newly inducted doctors and wished them the best in their future endeavours.

In a goodwill message, the former Chief Medical Director, ABUTH, Prof Abdulmumini Hassan Rafindadi, advised the newly inducted doctors to avoid actions that would jeopardize their career.

He also encouraged them to always conduct themselves professionally in discharging their duties and always strive to build themselves.

Former Kaduna State Commissioner of Health, Dr Amina Mohammed Baloni, encouraged the new doctors to see their graduation to work hard in order to become great doctors.

She called on them to put their head down and always be willing to learn and practice so as to improve while striving for the best.

The oath was administered by the Registrar Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Prof Fatima Kyari, who was represented by Dr Tijjani Aliyu.
