The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has given an update on efforts towards addressing the utility challenges in the institution.

Prof Ahmed gave the update when he addressed the 85th (Ordinary Meeting) of Congregation held at Mamman Kontagora Square recently.

He explained that the university had in the last three months confronted the energy challenge head on as its goal had been to reduce energy costs by at least 20 percent within four months.

According to him, through the collective efforts of the two committees on energy set up the university energy bills dropped by ₦120 million in June.

He said this was beside strengthening the Bulk Metering Unit with equipment, transportation, and office facilities.

The university, he further said, was currently undertaking replacement of high-energy-consuming appliances and systems with more efficient alternatives.

“We also followed up with a push towards renewable energy supply, which paid off in July with approval by the Federal Government to build a 10-megawatt solar farm for the university”, he said.

On water challenge, Prof Ahmed explained that the university evolved new management strategies that had improved water supplies to residential areas.

He explained that the institution was also supplementing existing supply with borehole development in priority locations in addition to improving coordination and maintenance of existing water infrastructure to enhance reliability.

Ahmed said ABU Medical Centre was equally receiving close attention as plans were afoot to recruit medical and support personnel with provision of critical equipment and diagnostic tools.

He said it was also the intension of the university to establish a sustainable and responsive drug supply system with a renewed engagement with NHIS to improve service delivery and reduce administrative delays.

According to him, the university was equally pursuing a model that would seperate staff medical services from student medical services to ensure better focus, reduced congestion, and higher quality care delivery.
