VC tasks ABU scholars on poems written by Sokoto caliphate founder, Sheikh Usmanu Danfodio
The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has urged academic staff to work on the over 480 poems written by the 18th century founder of the Sokoto caliphate, Sheikh Usmanu Danfodio.
Prof Ahmed spoke at a lecture organised by Ahmadu Bello University Faculty of Arts Committee on Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, Public Lectures, Research Grants, and Scholarships.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, the Vice-Chancellor stressed the need for more attention on the poems with a view to conducting research on the literary works.
He said there were many speeches of some past heroes that could help in reshaping the thoughts of leaders and students alike.
Prof Ahmed also encouraged the university’s Faculty of Arts to appreciate the literary contributions of Danfodio and his brother who were literary scholars of their time.
He said Danfodio’s literary works, if properly documented, would help in lifting the academic standard of the Faculty.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed that organising lecture series remained the legacy of the institution’s Faculty of Arts.
Prof Ahmed expressed happiness over the revival of the lecture series which according to him was the faculty’s selling point.
Ahmed called on the Faculty Arts Seminars Committee to be sending copies of lectures to his office for documentation.
He congratulated the Head, Department of English and Literary Studies, Dean Faculty of Arts, and the presenter for a successful presentation.
