A distinguished digital education innovator, Prof Muhammed Bashir Mu’azu, is the new Director of the Distance Learning Centre (DLC), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Mu’azu, who will be guided by a structured set of expectations as included in his letter of appointment, is expected to provide transformative leadership to the Centre.

Prof Mu’azu teaches at the Department of Computer Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is also Director, Nigeria National Centre, International Institute of Online Education (IIOE), a digital learning body, which is domiciled at Ahmadu Bello University.

He replaces Prof Aliyu Yahaya, who is now redeployed to Arewa House – Centre for Historical Documentation and Research, as Director.

A letter by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, conveying the appointment, explained that Prof Mu’azu’s new assignment was based on his demonstrated commitment to excellence in open and distance learning.

The Vice-Chancellor also said Mu’azu’s previous roles as former Head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Director, Iya Abubakar Institute of Information and Communication Technology (IAIICT), among others, made him “exceptionally suited for the new assignment.”

The letter described his expertise in computational and digital learning systems as “especially timely”, as the university sought to reposition its DLC as a centre of national and continental excellence in open and distance learning.

Mu’azu’s appointment, which is for a period of two years, takes effect from Wednesday, 16th July, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, also approved the appointment of Prof Aliyu Yahaya as the new Director of Arewa House – Centre for Historical Documentation and Research.

Until this appointment, Prof Yahaya was the Director of the institution’s Distance Learning Centre (DLC).

He was also a Dean of Social Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The Vice-Chancellor said in a letter appointing him as the Arewa House Director that Yahaya’s appointment was in recognition of his distinguished academic pedigree and proven leadership capacity.

Prof Yahaya’s appointment, according to the Vice-Chancellor, was also for his demonstrated exceptional capacity for institutional leadership and strategic development.

The letter further said that Yahaya’s assignment came at a crucial time when Arewa House must redefine its role in national discourse, research, and public engagement.

“You are therefore expected to deploy your academic expertise, administrative skills, and visionary leadership to deliver on the specific tasks and responsibilities as attached to the letter of appointment,” it said.

Yahaya is to steer the affairs of Arewa House for a period of two years, effective Wednesday, 16th July, 2025.
