Vice-Chancellor says tree planting has enormous impacts on climate change

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, has stressed the importance of tree planting, saying the activity has enormous impacts on climate change.

Prof Ahmed made this known when the university marked the 2nd phase of this year’s World Environmental Day at the ABU-UNICEF Tree Planting Site on Saturday, 21st June, 2025.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to spread the initiative to their families and communities so as to have everyone on board and plant as many trees as possible to help reduce the negative impact of climate change.

He commended the institution’s students for being part of what he termed a “legacy” of planting trees that in 10 years to come would make a beautiful park.

The Dean, Student Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, explained that the ABU-UNICEF project was mainly aimed at students in order to properly orient them on making environmentally friendly decisions.

The students were selected based on interests that were shown by filling a google form and the first 100 were selected.

He encouraged the students to fully participate as planting of trees was the basis for a green and healthy environment.

The Chairman, Ahmadu Bello University Tree Planting and Environmental Sustainability Committee, Dr S.K Musa, said the tree planting exercise had been the tradition of the institution to plant trees annually in strategic areas of the university.

According to him, this year, UNICEF had come on board with their terms of reference being student centric for tree planting and recycling, describing the initiative as a welcome development.

Also speaking, a member of the committee, Muhammad Rabiu Isa, explained that a workshop was conducted before coming to the field.

He said a lot of students, mostly females, participated in the workshop and that they were selected to take part in the field.

He expressed delight at the enthusiasm shown by the students as over a thousand trees were planted in less than two hours.

A variety of trees were planted and they included baobab, plum, locust tree, among others.
