Jamaica-based global medical college grants $125,000 scholarship to five ABU academic staff
A total of five academic staff of Ahmadu Bello University have secured a $125,000 scholarship for MSc and Fellowship in oral and maxillofacial implantology.
All of them are from the Faculty of Dentistry. Each will receive a $25,000 scholarship for the postgraduate programme.
Dr Musa Sani Yerima, Muhammad Abubakar Gumi, Dr Atiku L Atiku, Dr Johnson A. O, and Dr Emmanuel Bwala Paktama are the beneficiaries.
The scholarship was granted by the Global University of Medical Sciences (GUMS), Jamaica. The university is a subsidiary of the International Postgraduate Medical College (IPMC).
GUMS primarily focuses on specialist training in dental disciplines, including Master’s programme in oral surgery, maxillofacial surgery, implantology, and oral medicine.
The scholarship was facilitated by Prof Christopher Ogunsalu, who is the President of International Postgraduate Medical College (IPMC).
The presentation of scholarship admission to the beneficiaries was made by the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed.
The brief but colourful event took place at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Shika – Zaria on Friday, 26th June, 2026.
Both the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Dentistry, Prof Sunday Olusegun Ajike, who spoke at the occasion, appreciated the IPMC President, Prof Christopher Ogunsalu, for facilitating the scholarship.
Others who spoke at the gathering included the Chief Medical Director, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Prof Ahmad Umdagas, and the Provost, ABU College of Medical Sciences, Prof Dahiru Ismail.
They were delighted over the gesture and urged the beneficiaries to make best use of opportunity for the development of their academic career.
It would be recalled that it was the IPMC President, Prof Christopher Ogunsalu who facilitated the establishment of the Nigerian Academy of Dental Implantology (NADI) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The academy, domiciled at the Faculty of Dentistry, was commissioned by the President of the International College of Dentists (ICD), Dr Ian Doyle, last year.
Prof Ogunsalu also facilitated the presentation of medical instruments to all 14 first set of dental students of the ABU Faculty of Dentistry.
