ABU approaches Federal Mortgage Bank for staff housing
Worried by the difficulty in accessing funding for years by Ahmadu Bello University in-house unions for staff housing, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has directly approached the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to enable staff of the institution to own houses with ease.
The Vice-Chancellor was at the Head Office of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) last week, and had a discussion with the bank’s management staff on the frustrations suffered by ABU in-house unions in accessing mortgage facilities for their members to build their own houses.
The bank’s Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, presided over the meeting with the Executive Director, Loans, Dr. Sani Abdu, in attendance.
Prof. Ahmed, who called for the bank’s support to help end the staff’s frustrations in accessing the mortgage facilities, explained that the University had to intervene centrally as the staff housing project seemed to be too complex to be handled solely by the unions.
In his response, the bank’s Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, who sympathized with the staff of the University for the housing challenges faced over the years, assured the Vice-Chancellor that the institution’s request would be a priority to the bank.
Both FMBN and ABU resolved to raise a joint high-powered committee to ensure the housing project for the staff of the university was revived as quickly as possible.
The Vice-Chancellor, who used the opportunity to interact with a good number of ABU alumni working as staff of the bank, appreciated the Managing Director and other Management staff for the warm reception accorded him.
The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria is the apex mortgage finance institution in the country, and its activities have been geared towards the development and regulation of primary mortgage originators and managing the National Housing Fund.
Prof. Ahmed assumed the mantle of leadership as the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University on 30th April, 2025.
Staff welfare, especially exploring ways for staff both in service and retirement to own their houses, remains one of the new Vice-Chancellor’s strategic goals and priorities.
