ABU Nematology Student Club celebrates members for outstanding academic accomplishments

The Namotology Student Club at the Department of Crop Protection of Ahmadu Bello University has celebrated eight of its pioneer members for outstanding academic performance during their studies at the institution.

All the eight students chose nematology as their focus for undergraduate research.

Five of them graduated from the Department of Crop Protection and they were among the over 20,000 graduands for the 2023/2024 academic session that attended the University’s last convocation ceremony held on 25th January, 2025.

Of the five from the Department of Crop Protection, three graduated with First Class Honours and they are Akhaiyemen Paul Omoh, Ahmad Abdulrahman, and Mathew Grace Unekwuojo. Two others, namely Ibrahim Hafsat Toure and Medessou Emmanuel Ibukun, bagged Second Class Upper.

The three others were from the Department of Pest Management, Samaru College of Agriculture who completed their Higher National Diploma (HND) at the College. They include Ibrahim Fatima who graduated with Distinction as well as Mahmud Abubakar and Abdulroheem Abdullah who graduated with Upper Credit.

The Nematology Education in Sub-Saharan Africa (NEMEDUSSA) encouraged the establishment of the Nematology Student Club at Ahmadu Bello University.

NEMEDUSSA, coordinated by Ghent University, Belgium, and funded by the European Union through Erasmus+, aims to advance nematology education and research across Sub-Saharan Africa.

One of its key objectives is to establish student clubs in partner institutions to raise awareness, foster interest, and encourage research in this critical yet underexplored field.

The club, established at the Department of Crop Protection, is being guided by the club’s coordinator and research supervisor, Dr. Julius Bulus.

The students’ remarkable achievements highlight the transformative role of the Nematology Student Club in inspiring a new generation of researchers in this vital field.

The club coordinator commended the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Head of Department of Crop Protection and the staff members in the nematology unit for their dedication to ensuring the success of this initiative.

He also expressed gratitude to the NEMEDUSSA consortium, particularly its coordinating institution, Ghent University, Belgium.
