ABU participates in Wuhan conference on traditional medicine
Ahmadu Bello University was one of the participants of the ‘7th Belt and Road’ International Conference on Traditional Medicine held in Wuhan, China from 19th – 20th December, 2024.
The University gave a keynote lecture at the conference. The lecture, entitled ‘Unlocking the Power of Nigerian Herbal Medicine: A Key to Global Health Transformation’, was delivered by the Ag. Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Prof. Mohammed Garba Magaji.
Delivering the lecture, Prof. Magaji sought for global collaboration in harnessing the potential for Nigerian herbal medicine for the benefit of all.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, who led the University delegation to the two-day international gathering, spoke at the conference and highlighted the importance of the global meeting.
Many papers, particularly on the history, utilisation and efficacy of herbal medicines in various cultures and traditions across the globe were presented at the conference.
In his presentation, the Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), Prof. Ado Yusuf, stressed the importance of integrating medicinal plants in Nigerian farming systems.
Prof. Yusuf spoke on ‘Breeding for Nutrition and Health: The Institute for Agricultural Research’s Mandate and Achievements in Crop and Artemisia Research in Nigeria’.
Equally, the Head of Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development, Dr. Zayd Abubakar, talked at the conference when he presented a paper, entitled ‘Prospects of African Traditional Medicine in Health Care and Commerce’.
The international gathering, which was attended by participants from Asia, Africa, and Europe, stressed the need for the formation of a global association of researchers on traditional medicines.
