’67 years after graduation, Prof Iya Abubakar’s record at UI still stands tall’
The academic records of former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Iya Abubakar, at the University of Ibadan’s Department of Mathematics still stand tall since his graduation in 1957, the Head of the Department, Dr Murphy E Egwe, confirmed.
Dr Egwe, an associate professor at the premier institution (formerly University College Ibadan), disclosed this in his goodwill message at a birthday party in honour of Prof Abubakar who clocked 90 years on Saturday, 14th December, 2024.
The event, which took place at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja, was jointly put together by the Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria and Nigeria Computer Society.
The HOD explained that Abubakar, according to records at the UI Mathematics Department, was a destined first position occupier in his class and world.
“The admission records of the 1955 admission set show that only six students were admitted for that year and even when the names were arranged in alphabetical order, he still occupied the first position”, he said.
He further disclosed that in his set Abubakar was the only student who had a First Class (Honours) in Mathematics of the University of Ibadan.
“This singular act distinguished him out of all and since then he has remained an excellent ambassador of the Department of Mathematics and the University of Ibadan”, he further said.
Dr Egwe described Abubakar as a well-known world class mathematician and as an example of what it is called in Mathematics “Unique Solution to a World of Chaos.”
The HOD, who also described Abubakar’s legacies as ‘unequalled’, congratulated the celebrant and wished him many more years in good health.
