ABU Centre for Disaster Risk Management holds stakeholders meeting on climate adaptation research
The research team for Climate Adaptation Research Programme (CARP), anchored by the Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, has organised a stakeholders meeting.
The technical meeting, which is the first since the establishment of the programme, held at CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on Saturday, 3rd February, 2024.
The Chairman of the research team, Prof. Edwin Eguisi, explained that CARP aims to promote a new generation of applied climate adaptation research across Africa with a focus on its impact and implications for disaster risk reduction policies and strategies.
Prof. Eguisi said that the programme gave an opening to researchers from the 12 African universities that make up the PERIPERI-U Network, for which ABU team is representing Nigeria.
He also said that the core goal of the programme is to provide policy makers, governments, and donor agencies with improved scientific and research-driven knowledge on climate adaptation and risk mitigation that can inform public decision-making.
A core focus of the programme, according to him, is to conduct applied, problem driven research on climate change related issues in Africa that have applications for DRR across the continent as well as initiate and develop a global DRR community that aims to foster engagement and capacity development among academics, researchers and policy makers.
In particular, emphasis will be placed to provide opportunities for early career scholars and postgraduate students among the partner universities to participate in the research and development of the community.
He said that CARP is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance and is co-managed by the Humanitarian Assistance Technical Support Initiative at the University of Arizona with the Centre for Collaboration in Africa and the PERIPERI-U Secretariat at Stellenbosch University.
The CARP research group will conduct the research on adaptation and prediction of climate variability for flood risk management in Hadejia River-Basin and its environs, and multi-geospatial risk modeling of the Nigerian Sudano-Sahelian Climate Region in the emergent of ecological and human transition to flood susceptibility.
