ABU signs MOU to support Liberian university

Ahmadu Bello University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support the Lofa County University of Liberia (LCU).

LCU President and Chief Executive Officer Prof Dr Isaac Podah expressed appreciation for ABU’s willingness to support the Liberian university in human capacity building and development of faculties.

Prof Podah, who was accompanied by LCU’s Associate Vice President for Planing and Institutional Development Momo Saah Taylor, said ABU has what it takes to make LCU world standard and this is the first collaboration in the history of the Liberian university.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said ABU was willing to support LCU with staff, equipment, teaching and learning.

Prof Ahmed said they would move beyond just signing an MOU but also set timelines to ensure preliminary implementation before the end of 2026.

He added that it was time Africa looks inward for support and ABU is a fulcrum.

The Vice-Chancellor pointed out that the MOU was a continued cooperation between Nigeria and Liberia not just the two universities.

The Director, ABU Directorate of Advancement and International Education, Prof M I Umar-Buratai, commended Dr Abubakar Bello of University of Maiduguri for facilitating the MOU.

Umar-Buratai added that the collaboration would grow beyond staff development to post graduate studies and even distance learning programmes and much more.

Also speaking, the Provost, ABU Postgraduate College, Prof Oluyinka O. Okubanjo, prayed for a fruitful relationship and thanked LCU’s leadership for their vision.

He added that signing the MOU marked the beginning of a versatile relationship as there is a lot of fields to collaborate.

A number of Deans and Heads of Department were among those who attended the MOU signing ceremony.
