Arewa House holds one-day round-table dialogue in honor of Sir Ahmadu Bello
The Centre for Research and Historical Documentation, Arewa House, Ahmadu Bello University, has organised a round-table dialogue in honour of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Premier of Northern Nigeria.
The dialogue, themed “Remembering Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardaunan Sokoto, Sixty Years After: A Dialogue in Unity and Vision”, took place at the Auditorium of Arewa House in Kaduna on Thursday, 26th February, 2026.
Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof Adamu Ahmed, described the event as significant, which would continue to inspire generations.
The Vice-Chancellor was epresented by the Dean, Faculty of Administration, Prof Mohammed Kabir Isah.
He commended the organizers for choosing an important topic and inviting different erudite scholars who would enrich the understanding of Sardauna’s legacies and their implications for the future of the north and Nigeria at large.
Prof Ahmed said the Arewa House as a Centre for Research and Historical Documentation was uniquely positioned to host the dialogue.
He said it was also strategically placed to serve as a beacon for intellectual discourse that preserves the rich history of the North and contributes to national development, through research, documentation, and promotion of the heritage of the region.
He noted that Arewa House being the official residence of the late Sardauna, was a testament to his enduring connection with ABU.
He also stressed that it provides a befitting venue for scholars, policymakers and leaders to engage with the late Premier’s vision of unity and nation building.
Earlier in an address of welcome, the Director, Arewa House, Prof Aliyu Yahaya, thanked the panelists and participants for honouring their invitation.
Prof Yahaya emphasized that the dialogue should not be to merely commemorate Sardauna, but to also reflect on an era 60 years after his passing, as his legacies continued to resonates.
The Director urged the panelists who came from different institutions and disciplines across the country to develop their presentations into chapters for reference purpose and subsequent archiving at the Arewa House.
Yahaya thanked members of the local organising committee for their efforts in ensuring the success of the dialogue.
The dialogue was moderated by the former Director of Arewa House, Prof Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, who also made some reflections on the life and legacies of the late Premier.
In a vote of thanks, the Chairman of the local organizing committee, Prof Salisu Bala, thanked the panelists and all participants for attending the event.
Prof Salisu appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for their unwavering support towards the success of the dialogue.
The panelists were Prof Ahmed Bako of the Department of History and International Studies, Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto; Prof Chris Kwaja, Department of International Relations and Strategic studies, Modibbo Adama University, Yola; and Prof. Hauwa Evelyn Yusuf, Department of Sociology, Kaduna State University, Kaduna.
Others were Prof Asma’u Garba Sa’eed, Department of History, Bayero University, Kano; Prof Dalhatu Muhammed Jumare, Department of Local Government Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; and Prof Dayyabu Muhammad Hassan, Department of Political Science and International Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The event was attended by the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairperson, Kaduna State Electoral Commission, Hajara Mohammed, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, academics, technocrats and stakeholders within and outside ABU.
