FG awards contract for upgrade of NAPRI’s artificial insemination unit

The Federal Government has awarded a contract for the upgrade of artificial insemination and embryo transfer unit at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The scope of the project includes paddocks rehabilitation for breed multiplication.

It also consists of rehabilitation of bull stud and semen collection parlour, liquid nitrogen house, and artificial insemination and embryo transfer laboratory.

This was disclosed by the National Project Coordinator for the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Dr Sanusi Abubakar.

Dr Abubakar spoke at the commissioning of L-PRES intervention projects at NAPRI at Shika in Zaria on Wednesday, 21st January, 2026.

The projects were commissioned by the Hon. Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha.

The national coordinator also announced the World Bank’s approval for further interventions at NAPRI for upgrade of dairy facility as well as upgrade of Shika brown layer chicken and selection of a broiler strain.

Other intervention projects approved for NAPRI include procurement of automatic feed milling machine with solar powered system as well as upgrade of beef slaughter unit with accessories and update of Nigerian indigenous sheep and goat project.

He said the World Bank also approved for the provision of solar powered boreholes across selected gazeted grazing reserves in Nigeria to address the scarcity of water resources.

Abubakar said the World Bank, as a reward for the demonstrated impact of L-PRES projects, described L-PRES activities as “satisfactory” with potential for additional financing and project extension.

The L-PRES coordinator urged the National Animal Production Research Institute to continue to support the Federal Government and L-PRES in their journey to a sustainable transformation of the livestock sector.

He said the commissioning of the four intervention projects at NAPRI was an initiative facilitated with the support of the Hon. Minister of Livestock Development under the Component 1 of L-PRES which supports institution and innovation system strengthening.

According to him, the L-PRES component 1 largely supported relevant institutions such as NAPRI with interventions to build capacity for research and policy formulation.

He explained that such interventions had been demonstrated in the construction of hay barn, pasture seed processing unit with seed store, equipment supply and installation for the seed processing unit and solar powered boreholes with water troughs.
