Encomiums as ABU Law Faculty celebrates mentors

The Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has honoured 12 living and deceased retired academic staff of the faculty.

The award ceremony took place today, Friday 19th December, 2025, at the Faculty of Law Moot Court, Kongo Campus, ABU, Zaria.

Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said the league of the great men and a woman were honoured not for the purpose of celebration, but for the show of institutional appreciation.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research and Innovation, Prof Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, the Vice-Chancellor said that what the awardees had done for the university at the level of management, governance and policy implementation would never be forgotten.

Ahmed also said because of the respect the faculty commanded, the university would hardly have a committee without a representative from there.

He said he was honoured to be part of the committees headed by some of the retiring members.

The Vice-Chancellor wished the retirees a healthy life and prayed for the souls of the departed members.

Earlier in an address, the Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof Salim Bashir Magashi, stated that the purpose of the gathering went beyond formality.

Prof Magashi explained that the event was the first of its kind, which reflected the belief that people were gathered to celebrate scholarship.

According to him, the faculty decided to organise the event in order to honour senior colleagues, mentors and fallen heroes who served the university with professionalism.

The Dean appreciated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for their unwavering support towards the success of the event.

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Prof Ibrahim Naiya Sada, expressed gratitude to the Dean and all faculty members for choosing to honour them.

Prof Sada, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, said even though they had their rough days, Faculty of Law was like a family and that all of them grew up together as brothers and sisters.

He expressed delight to the University Management for the opportunity given to them to become scholars.

Prof Sada further thanked his family for their support, endurance and the ability to resist the temptations of material things.

The former Deputy Vice-Chancellor assured the Dean and other faculty members of their readiness to continue supporting the growth and development of the faculty.

Also speaking, Prof Nuhu Mohammed Jamo explained that the Faculty of Law gave them the multiple opportunities they had in life, which helped in projecting ABU at both national and international level.

Prof Jamo, a former member of Ahmadu Bello University Governing Council, emphasized that he was responsible for the establishment of the faculty’s Moot Court and other theatres.

He announced that they were making moves to establish a Centre for Human Rights and Humanitarian Studies within the faculty.

Others who also spoke on the retired academic staff included former Dean of the Faculty, Prof Y Y Bambale; Director, Institute of Administration, Prof Abubakar Madaki; and former Director, Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS), Prof M B Uthman.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr Hannatu Adamu, extended gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for honouring their invitation, describing it as a mark of respect for the retirees.

Hannatu also thanked the Dean for his excellent leadership and appreciated all the awardees for showing up.

Those honoured included Prof Musa Gelle Yakubu, Alhaji Baba Shani (deceased), Prof Kharisu S Chukkol (deceased), and Prof Ibrahim Naiya Sada.

Others were Prof Aminu Mohammed Gurin, Prof Ibrahim Ahmad Aliyu, Prof Yusuf Aboki, and Prof Jummai Mohammed Audi.

They also included Prof Nuhu Mohammed Jamo, Prof Yusuf Abbas Dankofa (deceased), Prof Joseph Irokalibe Goldface (deceased), and Dr Umar Salihu Mohammed.
