ABU to celebrate World Soil Day with sensitization walk tomorrow
The Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Ahmadu Bello University, will tomorrow organise a sensitization walk in commemoration of World Soil Day 2025.
Christened ‘Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities’, the event is aimed at creating awareness on the role of soil in the sustenance of life on earth.
The sensitization walk, according to the Head of Department of Soil Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Aisha Abdulkadir, would hold at the main campus of the university at Samaru in Zaria on Friday, 5th December, 2025.
The walk, billed to start from 9:00am, will be in form of procession by staff and students of the Department of Soil Science along the major routes on the campus.
Prof Abdulkadir explained in a notification for the event that the walk would start from the garden directly opposite the University Central Mosque.
World Soil Day (WSD) is celebrated every 5th December to spotlight the vital role of healthy soils and promote their sustainable management.
It is an observance facilitated globally by FAO’s Global Soil Partnership following the UN General Assembly’s 2013 mandate.
This year’s celebration focuses on urban soils and the growing challenge of soil sealing, the covering or compaction of soil by impermeable materials, which worsens flooding risks and limits groundwater recharge.
This is a timely call to bring soil science into city planning, infrastructure, and public awareness.
