Nigerian Young Academy reaffirms commitment to promoting research ethics, intellectual property protection

The just-concluded 15th International Conference of the Nigerian Young Academy has reaffirmed the commitment of the academy towards the promotion of research ethics and protection of intellectual property.

It also pledged to intensify effort in mentorship, science advocacy, and policy engagement in order to contribute meaningfully to national development.

This resolve by the academy was contained in a communiqué issued after the four-day conference held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The conference, themed ‘Navigating Research Ethics and Intellectual Property’, took place at the Africa Centre of Excellence on New Pedagogies in Engineering Education (ACENPEE), ABU, Zaria from 25th-28th August, 2025.

The academy, according to the communiqué signed by Dr Nuruddeen Nasiru Garba, also resolved to strengthen its role as a platform for young researchers to collaborate, network, and innovate across disciplines.

It thanked Ahmadu Bello University, ACENPEE, plenary speakers, partners, and many others for contributing towards the success of the conference.

The academy called on government and other key stakeholders to provide stronger support for research, innovation, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

The conference was chaired by the President of the Nigerian Academy of Sciences (NAS), Prof Abubakar Sani Sambo, who is currently the Commissioner of Education for Kaduna State.

Prof Raymond B Bako, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic, Ahmadu Bello University, delivered the keynote address in addition to representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed.

The conference featured three plenty lectures delivered by Prof Ganiyu Oboh, Prof Rabia Salihu Sa’id, and Prof Aliyu Rafindadi Sanusi.

While Prof Oboh spoke on ‘Unlocking Nature’s Potential for Food Security, Human Health and Environmental Sustainability’, Prof Sa’id talked on ‘Understanding Complex Systems: Applying Physics Principles in Driving Sustainability’

Rafindadi, who is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advancement, Research, and Innovation, Ahmadu Bello University, delivered the third plenary lecture.

He spoke on ‘Mission Oriented, Ethically Grounded Innovation: Integrating Arts and Humanities with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Health (STEH) for Sustainable Development’.

Equally at the conference, a good number of scholars presented papers on intellectual property rights, ethical challenges in research, and hands-on training in developing institutional IP strategies.
