ABU encourages staff, students to apply for grants from Japanese funding agencies

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, says the institution will support and guide its staff and students willing to apply for grants from the Japanese funding agencies.

This was contained in a brief report on the outcome of ABU’s participation at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) at Yokohama in Japan last week.

The Vice-Chancellor represented the university at the conference sponsored by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Prof Ahmed’s encouragement for grants applications was on the strength of his ability to initiate new collaborations and funding opportunities for the university.

He listed some of the Japanese funding agencies such as the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Prof Ahmed also said the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, Technology of Japan (MEXT), and Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT) are other Japanese funding agencies.

The Vice-Chancellor was warmly received by the Japanese authorities as he was among the few selected dignitaries, including some presidents of other countries, invited to a dinner with the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Shigeru Ishiba.

In addition, the Vice-Chancellor had a series of other engagements and meetings with some Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officials, including Prof Satoshi Kaneko of the Nagasaki University and Prof Yasutoshi Kido of the Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU).

The strong linkage between ABU and OMU through ABU’s Department of Biochemistry and Africa Centre of Excellence for Neglected Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology (ACENTDFB) led to the admission of two recent MSc graduates of the Biochemistry Department for PhD programme with full scholarship from MEXT.

The PhD students, who were admitted into the Department of Virology/Parasitology of Osaka Metropolitan University, are expected to arrive in Osaka in the third week of September.

The Vice-Chancellor, who spoke on behalf of African universities at the exit dinner with the Prime Minister of Japan, appreciated the Japanese Government for all the support to ABU in the area of staff training.
