Ahmadu Bello University has continued to carry the burdens of other institutions through training and retraining, according to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed.
Prof Ahmed made this known today – Monday, 18th August, 2025 – when he received the Ministerial Monitoring Committee on Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) 2025 High Impact Intervention Projects for Medical Schools in six geopolitical zones.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Ahmed Doko Ibrahim, described the coming of the ministerial committee as timely.
Prof Ahmed also described consideration of ABU for the project as justifiable.
He stated that the pressure on the university as regards medical courses was enormous, as it was not possible to provide everything that everyone required.
Prof Ahmed thanked the committee for coming and wished them successful stay in the university.
Earlier in his remarks, the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Prof Muhammad Sani Shehu, said the special intervention was to improve the medical courses in order to prevent the ‘japa’ syndrome.
The Provost also said the College wrote a proposal to TETFUND and received a response.
Prof Shehu said ABU was one of the beneficiary universities in the Northwest.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof Sa’ad Ahmed, stated that the committee was essentially to monitor the utilization of resources and improve its allocation to prevent doctors from running away from the country.
He said the committee would see to the procurement of simulation and laboratory equipment.
Prof Sa’ad stated that the committee would also see to the rehabilitation of lecture venues, laboratories, and upgrade of CBT and library facility areas with functional 2000 computers and 40KWH solar supply for pre-clinical and clinical.
According to him, with the intervention, the committee would cater for the securing of additional 50 each of phantom heads and dental chairs.
Sa’ad, who is also the Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Abuja, emphasized that the intervention would also cover Model Pharmacy equipped with pharmocovigilance and drug information service facilities and pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory.
The Chairman of the Committee thanked the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management for the warm reception accorded them.
Those, who supported the Vice-Chancellor in receiving the guests were the representative of the Bursar, Malam Garba Shehu; Ag. University Librarian, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi Mohammed; and Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Ibrahim Sani Kaita.
