A Focal Point for Climate Change with the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Theresa Pamma, has explained the real objectives of the UNICEF Green Rising Project in Ahmadu Bello University.
Speaking when she called on the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, Pamma said that the initiative was to build the capacity of youths in respect of climate change intervention.
Pamma, also a specialist in water, sanitation, and hygiene, told the Vice-Chancellor that she was at the university to appreciate the partnership between ABU and UNICEF.
She further stressed the importance of maintaining the ties between the two organisations as Ahmadu Bello University has a history of tree planting.
Pamma encouraged the institution to continue to preserve its history of being environment friendly as part of effort to maintain the partnership.
She called on students of the institution to continue with the advocacy of planting trees even after graduation.
Pamma thanked the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, and Dean, Students Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, for their unwavering support towards the success of the project.
Responding, Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, expressed gratitude to Theresa Pamma and UNICEF for taking interest in the University.
Prof Ahmed noted that the university would ensure that every graduating student plant a tree before graduation.
The Vice-Chancellor thanked the specialist for coming to energize the university on its long time tradition.
Prof Ahmed said the recycling programme had taken shape and that the cooperation it was getting from the university was encouraging.
The Vice-Chancellor also assured Pamma that the university would continue to do the needful in supporting the Green Rising Project.
In his remarks, the Dean, Students Affairs Division, Prof Sahalu B Junaidu, said Ahmadu Bello University was highly recognised and must do everything to protect its integrity.
This, according to him, was to maintain the culture and good image the university had built over the years.
Prof Sahalu disclosed that students of the institution had planted over 2,000 trees and that they would be visiting the site subsequently for maintenance.
The Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Prof Bello Mukhtar, was among those who supported the Vice-Chancellor in receiving the UNICEF official.
After the courtesy visit, Mrs. Pamma had an interactive session with students and was eventually taken round the site, where 2080 trees were planted.
