14 ABU staff attract over N300 million research grants

Fourteen academic staff of Ahmadu Bello University attracted over N300 million from national and international sources in grants for various research activities in 2023, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kabiru Bala, has disclosed.

The grants attraction, according to him, was in addition to over 60 Institutions-Based Research (IBR) grants offered to staff with competing proposals.

Delivering a speech at the 43rd Convocation of the University held on Saturday, 27th January, 2024, the Vice-Chancellor explained that of the 14 academic staff, nine won successful awards under the 2023 cycle of TETFUND National Research Fund (NRF) grants totaling N255,030,677.91.

The Vice-Chancellor, who expressed delight over the “waves” staff of the University have continued to make in terms of grants attraction from national and international sources in order to augment public sources, said that five others won other research grants worth over N50 million during the period.

Winners of the 2023 cycles of TETFUND National Research Fund (NRF) grants are as follows:

• Yusuf Shehu Mohammed, Research Title: ‘Development of Artificial Intelligence-Based Security System to Mitigate Incidence of Kidnapping and Car Theft in Ahmadu Bello University Campus’.
• Jaliya Muhammad Musa, Research Title: ‘SWAT Modelling Development and Deployment for Management of Irrigation Schemes to Improve Small Scale Farmers’ Livelihood in Nigeria’.
• Olanrewaju Taofiq Olayinka, Research Title: ‘Development of an Artificial (AI) Based Multi-Crop Planter’.
• Pateh Umar Usmanm, Research Title: ‘Isolation of Antimalarial Compounds from the Leaves and Roots of Globimetula Braunii (Engler) Van Tiegh Growing on Taminalia Catapa’.
• Kado Dikko, Research Title: ‘Conversion of Food and Farm Wastes to Renewable Energy’.
• Okubanjo Oluyinka Oluseyi, Research Title: ‘Establishment of a Biobank of One Health Pathogens in Nigeria’.
• Yusufu Lazarus Mungu Dambowoth, Research Title: ‘Development of a Clinical Pathway to Reduce Access Disparities in Early-Stage Breast Cancer in Northern Nigeria: A Transitional Science Approach’.
• Muhammad Hafsat Abdullahi, Research Title: ‘Application of Microsporidia MB for Transmission Blocking of Disease Agents in Anopheles Gambiae’.
• Garba Nuraddeen Nasiru, Research Title: ‘Fabrication of Radiation Shielding Barriers Using Local Building Materials for Protection Against Radiation Exposure in Radiological and Nuclear Centre’.

Some of the other research grants won by staff of the University include Meade Collaboration Travel Grant in Epidemiology Award, Carnegie Diaspora Fellowship Program Grant, Universal Basic Education Commission Grant, and Raw Materials Research Development Council Grants.
