0ver 6,000 fresh postgraduate students take ABU matriculation oath
More than 6,000 newly admitted postgraduate students of Ahmadu Bello University for the 2025/2026 academic session have taken the institution’s matriculation oath.
They took the oath at a matriculation ceremony held at the Postgraduate College Auditorium, ABU, Samaru, Zaria today, Wednesday, 23rd September, 2026.
Speaking at the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed, said the new students were joining ABU at an exciting time when postgraduate education in the university was taking a new direction.
He said postgraduate education was moving beyond the traditional approach towards a system that is increasingly research-driven, innovative, technology-enabled, collaborative and responsive to the needs of society.
Prof Ahmed said this year’s admission of approximately 6,000 students is a clear indication of the continuing confidence in ABU as a centre for advanced learning and research.
“You are now part of a growing community of scholars expected to continue to give knowledge and provide solutions to the challenges facing our nation and the world”, he said.
He said another major development shaping postgraduate education globally was the rapid growth of artificial intelligence in transforming the way “we learn, conduct research, analyse information, and disseminate knowledge”.
Ahmed enjoined the new students to focus on research with impact that would address real problems, generate new knowledge and solutions in order to improve lives and contribute to national development.
In his remarks, the Provost, Postgraduate College, Prof Oluyinka Oluseyi Okubanjo, congratulated the fresh students.
Okubanjo said the College was undergoing a deliberate process of renewal, re-engineering and rebirth with one central commitment to make postgraduate experience more purposeful and successful.
He enjoined the students to properly utilize the opportunity given to them to study at the prestigious university.
Also speaking, the Dean of Students, Prof Junaidu B Sahalu, stressed the need for revising the postgraduate documents.
He said the documents, when revised, which would serve as a guide and make the students to know more on the rules and regulations of the college programmes.
Prof Sahalu urged the students to take their research work seriously and to remain focused and disciplined.
The Dean also charged them to respect the school diversity as it is the strength of the university.
The Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre, Prof Hadiza Ahmed Tukur, spoke on the services the centre offers.
Other heads of units of the university, including University Health Services, Sports, Security and IAIICT, equally made brief presentations on the services they offer.
The matriculation oath was administered by the Registrar, Rabiu Samaila.
