The postgraduate School was established in 1980 to enable the University achieve a higher degree of emphasis and coordination in its postgraduate training and research. The school was also charges with the responsibility of assisting departments improve training programmes to provide qualified manpower for the University, other Universities, private sector, institutions of higher learning, public corporations and parastatals, federal and state governments. Recently, The Ahmadu Bello University along with the University of Ibadan and the University of Nigeria Nsukka have been charged with the responsibility of producing the needed manpower for other tertiary Institutions hence they should place more emphasis on postgraduate studies.


According to Statute 21 which established the Postgraduate School, the functions of the Postgraduate School shall be:



•Responsible for the coordination of postgraduate programmes of the University including planning, coordination, administration and admission to programmes of study:

•To recommend on the provision of appropriate facilities for postgraduate work and to regulate the disbursement of funds allocated for postgraduate work:

•The regulation and enhancement of the quality of postgraduate instruction and research in the University. This shall include educational and contact within Nigeria and where necessary outside:

•Promotion of publication of results of postgraduate studies:

•To monitor and evaluate the progress of work and to report to Senate at least once a year:

•To publicize the postgraduate activities of the University with a view to attracting enrolment and financial support from governmental, industrial and other bodies for the extension of these activities.

The University postgraduate (PG) policy spells out the guidelines for staff and student engagement in postgraduate activities in the Ahmadu Bello University. The PG policy envisages that each student would accomplish his/her studies within the stipulated duration for the corresponding study. Specifically, the terms of the policy are to define roles and duties of PG students, staff, Department and the Postgraduate School in the conduct of postgraduate studies in the University.

Collect your admission letters at the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) Auditorium as from Monday, 11th January, 2016. Proceed for screening exercise with original credentials to your Faculty Board Room between 10:00am to 2:00pm (11th Jan.-Feb. 5th, 2016). Go to Room B26 (SPGS) for verification of O-level results (if necessary). Pay Acceptance Fee of N5,500, Publication fee of N5,000 and Orientation Fee of N1,500.00 to the ABU Microfinance Bank Desk Officer at Room B20, SPGS. Take your Tellers to Room B10 (SPGS) to obtain your Acceptance Form and SPGS Publications. Wait for the uploading of your name and number on the portal to commence registration. Once uploading is completed proceed to pay your school fees at ANY of the designated Banks and register your courses after confirmation with your Department. Submit your File at the Records Office of SPGS after Departmental Registration. Late submission of your file the SPGS attracts a penalty of N5000.00. Return to collect your endorsed forms after 48hrs. Make copies of the Registration form for the Dept, Faculty and also keep personal copy. Registration closes on 5th February, 2016.
